India formally asks Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh




India on Monday asked Pakistan to release death row convict Sarabjit Singh, whose condition remains critical after being brutally assaulted by jail inmates in Lahore, and demanded that a through investigation be done into the attack to ensure punishment to the guilty.

The Indian government also asked Pakistan to consider the option of transferring 49-year-old Sarabjit to India so that he can benefit from the best medical treatment available here.

Based on the most recent medical bulletin put out by doctors treating him, it is clear that his condition remains critical, ministry of external affairs said, adding that it "shares the anguish and concern of his family members, and our prayers will remain with them".

In a statement, the ministry said, "In view of the recent tragic events and present circumstances, we once again appeal to the government of Pakistan to take a sympathetic and humanitarian view of this case, and release Sarabjit Singh."

It reiterated its demands that the attack on Sarabjit be thoroughly investigated to identify those who were responsible and to ensure that they are punished.

MEA also noted that "it is the responsibility of the government of Pakistan to ensure the safety and security of all Indian prisoners in their custody."

Meanwhile, the ministry said officials of the Indian high commission are in touch with the medical authorities at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore and "we would like them to consider the option of transferring Sarabjit Singh to India so that he can benefit from the best medical treatment available here."

Earlier, minister of state for home RPN Singh said India is ready to provide full medical assistance to Sarabjit.

"It is our endeavour and we will do whatever is in our hands to make sure that all proper medical treatment is given to Sarabjit Singh — whether it is Pakistani doctors or medical experts from foreign countries. We are also ready to provide full medical assistance, if there is a need for any assistance from our side," he told reporters outside Parliament House.

Sarabjit sustained several injuries, including a skull fracture, when six prisoners attacked him in Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday and doctors have said his chances of survival are slim.

He was hit on the head with bricks and grievously injured with sharp weapons. He is in a deep coma and on ventilator support in an intensive care unit of Jinnah Hospital.

He was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf. The Pakistan People's Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008.

His family says he is the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

India ranks 8 among 27 most powerful nations in world



India is among the top 10 most powerful countries in the world. In a first-of-its-kind study of "national power" a group of eminent strategic experts and scholars have placed India at the eighth position among a group of 27 most powerful countries in the world.

The study, conducted by the New Delhi-based Foundation for National Security Research (FSNR), judged "national power" by various indices, including energy security, population, technological capability etc. An interesting index of national power was judged by "foreign affairs capability", which includes self-reliance in defence, membership of multilateral groupings, role in global rule-making and soft power. Interestingly, though China comes out as the second most powerful nation in the world after the US, Chinese foreign affairs' capability is comparable to India's, even though in terms of total power New Delhi comes way below Beijing.

Professor Satish Kumar, introducing the study, said, "The Group of Experts evolved a criterion consisting of the following elements for the selection of countries which could be regarded as actually or potentially the most powerful: (i) Population above 50 million; (ii) GDP above US$ 500 billion; and (iii) defence expenditure above US$ 5 billion." The effort, he said, was to have an Indian assessment of indices of power.

The US is by far the world's most powerful nation, several notches ahead of its nearest competitor, China. The study observes, "China is still much lower than the US in energy security, technological capability and foreign affairs capability. Even in economic and military fields, the indexed value of China's capabilities is much lower than that of US. Therefore, any notion that China will pose a threat to the supremacy of the US in the near future has to be tempered with caution."

How powerful is India as a state? And how does India stack up against the most powerful states in the world?

According to the study, "India's economic capability stands at the eighth position and military capability at the seventh position. In technological capability, it ranks low, at the 17th position, and in energy security still lower at 20th position." Despite boasting a formidable array of foreign policy experts, the study found that in foreign affairs capability, India holds the 11th position and has a long way to go "(to) be able to discharge responsibilities commensurate with its large size and geopolitical importance."

India ranks very low in "military equipment, power projection, cyber and space security, as well as in its capability pertaining to doctrinal issues. Again, with regard to technological capability, particularly in the area of control over critical technology, India ranks extremely low."

The study gives India high marks for population capabilities, but does not specify that the nation's so-called "demographic dividend" could turn out to be a liability if India does not invest in its people. In the "manpower index" China scores much higher than India — 100 to India's 87.5 — while on the equipment index, India scores a pathetic 50. China scores a full 100 on being able to create an educated labour force, while India stands at 16. Certainly by this measure, India's position as one of the more powerful countries can be contested.

On deterrence and power projection, China scores 75, while India stands way behind at 60. China also invests a lot more than India on "strategic and doctrinal orientation", lending credence to the general criticism against India for a lack of strategic culture

Samsung overthrows Nokia to become the largest seller of mobile phones in India




Samsung has overtaken Nokia to become the largest seller of mobile phones in the country's major markets, as consumers lap up its new feature phones and its smartphones continue to do brisk business.

According to market tracker GfK-Nielsen's data, Samsung's volume market share in urban areas in March rose to 31.4%, surpassing Nokia's 30.1%. GfK-Nielsen urban panel tracks sales in 793 cities and towns with a population of over 50,000, which account for more than 70% of India's total handset sales.
This is the first time the Korean company's volume market share has crossed that of Nokia's in the GfK-Nielsen survey. The all-India figures, which will include rural sales, will be released shortly.

Some months ago, Samsung's market share, measured in value terms, had exceeded that of Nokia's, and there is now a considerable gap between the two due to growing demand for the Korean firm's smartphones.

NEW MODELS PUSH SALES

Last month, Samsung's value market share in urban markets stood at 42.2% compared with Nokia's 20.7%. Analysts say Samsung's gain in volume market share last month is led by the recent introduction of the Rex feature phone series and strong demand for smartphones such as Galaxy Grand and Note 2, the top-selling models at multi-brand retail outlets. Its newest premium smartphone, Galaxy S4, will be launched in India on Friday.
A Nokia India spokesperson said the company did not comment on country-specific market data, and added that it was executing its strategy with 'urgency and at a new clock speed'. The spokesperson said at the higher end of the price spectrum, the company had launched ten Nokia Lumia devices in the past 16 months and claimed that Asha 305 was the best-selling smartphone in India.

"We are competing at every price point with better mobile experience. Nokia will continue to deliver new and innovative solutions to consumers," she said.

Notwithstanding these initiatives, analysts and experts feel that Nokia's more than a decade-long leadership in the Indian handset market is under threat. The company, which once enjoyed a dominant 80% market share, has never completely recovered from its failure to anticipate and react to the dual-SIM handset boom a few years ago.

"It's truly unbelievable the way Nokia fell in India in the past six years. The brand failed to rejuvenate itself and fell prey to customer fatigue. Add to that the speed of execution - while Samsung was taking six months to launch a new model from the drawing board to retail store, Nokia was taking more than a year," said former BlackBerry India head Sunil Dutt, who was Nokia's head of sales till 2007. A Samsung India spokeswoman declined comment on the market share data. But Samsung India's Country Head (mobile phone & digital imaging) Vineet Taneja said the company has gained market share.

"Samsung has created new segments, such as the Note series or the Rex series, which was developed in India. We have developed a strong product portfolio straddling across entry-level smartphones till the premium segment," said Taneja. The Korean company has been the leader in the smartphones segment since end-2011, even as it trailed Nokia in the overall handset market.
